Youth Action Committee

The Youth Action Committee (YAC) is a diverse group of youth active in youth media programs at SPNN or alumni of SPNN Youth programs. The purpose of the committee is to:

1. Ensure a youth voice at SPNN

2. Increase youth involvement and opportunities at SPNN

3. Develop youth leaders

4. Raise awareness of youth media in festivals, online, and in the community. 

5. Raise awareness of broader youth media and community issues

YAC MEETING – February 21, 2012

Ice breaker: Change 1 thing

Discussion: Youth Space
            Media Lab: Put food cabinet near entryway where seats are.
                               Moving board to a more central location.
                               Moving computers to an “L” shape.
            Small Studio: Once cameras are moved out, get been bags and small 1-seater futons.

TCYMN Screening: This Saturday, February 11th, 1pm. Be at SPNN at 12pm for a ride.
TCYMN Summit: The summit will be on Saturday, May 12th, who wants to join the planning committee?  -- Sammie is interested
Promo for Master Control: Promos have been images in the past, Taj & Michelle want to put faces on the screen. Who is interested? – Destiny, Kyle, Andrew, Mikael.

PROMO VIDEOS:

Video Poetry Connections Classes –

  • Footage: Clips from last video poetry class
  • Skit, Motivational, Informational inside promo, Sharing poetry, A lot of B-roll and voice-over, Footage of YAC members putting together a video poem
  • People who might be interested: Writers, musicians, curious people
  • Video: B-roll of everyone putting together a video poetry and voice-over of information.  – Sammie, Andrew & Damian
  • Ideas: Text, music, images. Simple but informative. Someone performing a piece about the poetry class.

SOL Workshops

  • Footage:Speak to viewers: “Do you want to…? Get up! Sign up today!”
  • Main character morphing through different formats: First does poetry, then becomes an image moving through stop-motion, short film &PSA.
  • On-Screen: Kyle
  • Stop-motion portion: Destiny
  • Rest of group: Darartu, Darwesh, Mikael

Ideas:

  • Montage of all types of video
  • Each type of video feeding into another. Example: Someone performing poetry, putting down pencil, pencil moving around, writing a PSA, etc. Keep people guessing until the end.
  • A person doing poetry in animation, later pops out into real life and performs poetry, person gets sucked into a dramatic scene, scene stops and person gives a PSA.
  • A person driving and seeing billboards with messages

      How Facebook Operates:

      •  Time: More recent posts will show up
      •  Affinity: the more often you interact with a person/page on facebook, the more often their posts show up on your feed
      •   Interactions: The more people who like or comment on a post, the more likely it will show up on the news feed

      Larger Goals:

       PSA Idea brainstorm:

      • Not sad & cheesy like Sarah McLauclin videos about homeless dogs
      • Studio shoot – suddenly lights start shutting down, dark, emphasize the unwanted & unexpected shut-down of MTN
      • Catchy jingle
      • Yelling the whole time to keep attention
      • “Budget Cuts” written large on screen after fade-out.

      What is YAC?

      Andrew: YAC is a place where youth can voice their ideas and concerns to the youth department and SPNN as a whole. A lot of the ideas he saw on paper a long time ago is a reality now.

      Sami: YAC is a place to say what you feel and make videos to be known. Also do activities like the youth summit.

      Nicola: youth voices are important to SPNN and to the community

      YAC Meeting 10/25/2011

      Game of Ninja – Master Ninja is Joua!

      Reflections of Showboat Event:

                  Destiny: favorite part of the showboat was the food and talking to people

                  Breon: favorite part was the food and getting to hang out and meet to new people towards the end.

                  Joua: favorite part was the youth booth and Breon’s speech

      Making October Highlights video with iMovie

                  Notes: the project was started and saved but disappeared as a file. Michelle had to start from scratch on Final Cut.
