SPNN Youth screens Lightrail documentary at Cycles for Change

On the snowy evening of Monday, November 12th, five members of the SPNN Youth crew arrived at Cycles for Change, a not-for-profit community bike shop on University Avenue. Using a white sheet, which was artfully taped to the ceiling, a small projector, and about 15 chairs rolled in from around the shop, they quickly constructed a makeshift theater.

Get ready for another great season of Set It Up

Set It Up has officially started production on Season 13. We can hardly believe another whole year has come and gone, but each year when fall arrives, so does another great group of youth who are eager to learn about media production.  We're excited to have several return members, members joining us from other SPNN Youth programs, and some brand new participants in the crew this year.

On August 30, SPNN Youth took a break at the end of our full-steam-ahead summer programming schedule to reflect on the work we do with youth and staff involved in our programs and chart our direction for the coming year.  This process, called, the "SPNN Youth Retreat", is in its third year, and has become an integral part of our yearly process of evaluating significant accomplishments over the past year and looking forward to identify what lies ahead.

A new CTEP service year brings hellos and goodbyes

The Community Technology Empowerment Program (CTEP) AmeriCorps program at SPNN not only broadens our general programming reach in the Twin Cities metro area, it also enriches our day to day experience at our home office when a new SPNN Youth CTEP member joins the staff each year. Fall is the time when we celebrate the service contributions of our outgoing CTEP member and prepare a warm welcome for our new addition. In August, we bade farewell to outgoing CTEP member Joua Lee. Before parting ways, Joua wrote a final message to the organization about her experience...

Youth Interns celebrate the end of a great summer

Amid a jungle of balloons, streamers, and their own personal walk of fame, the 2012 SPNN Youth Interns welcomed their family and friends to their Hollywood premiere-themed final documentary screening at the Galtier Cinema in downtown St. Paul. This year's interns were the first to have their pieces shown in a real movie theater, so naturally there was some excitement about the event. They made ticket shaped programs to hand out to the guests. They pasted photos of their faces on colorful cutouts of stars.

On August 13th at Mears Park, SPNN’s Youth Action committee (YAC) hosted a fantastic event, Munchies, Music, and Movies: An SPNN Youth Film Festival. The festival had a lot of fun activities: live music, food, yard games, and a video reel. There were about 150 people that passed through or stayed for the whole festival.

Take One: Youth intern initiation done

In the realm of SPNN Youth high school programs, the summer youth interns are the equivalent of our incoming freshman class. They are certainly fresh- most come to us with little to no media experience- and in need of a little initiation into how things work and what to expect. This year, the 2012 SPNN Youth Interns celebrated the completion of their initiation into the realm of documentary video production with an exhibition of their first projects at Thursday’s Take One screening event...

Summer is in full swing, and for SPNN Youth, that means it's time for another action-packed session of the Youth Intern Program. Each year, twelve youth from around St. Paul are recruited to spend seven weeks in our intensive documentary production program. The interns travel all over the city, working in partnership with non-profit service organizations developing final projects on issues they care about in St. Paul.
