Welcome Chad Johnston, SPNN's new Executive Director

Following an extensive nationwide hiring process, SPNN has named Chad Johnston from The People’s Channel in Durham, NC as the organization’s new Executive Director.

Chad has been at The People’s Channel since 2004, working tirelessly to promote community media. A graduate of Antioch College, he brings with him a wealth of community media experience, including time spent in Argentina as an independent journalist, three years as a Board Member for the Alliance for Community Media, and many other accomplishments.

Take note: SPNN holiday closures

SPNN will have a number of closures over the next month. Please take note and plan accordingly.

The Access center will be closed December 23rd-January 1st. Access will re-open on Wednesday, January 2nd at 2 PM, which is earlier than usual, to give members additional hours.

The SPNN offices will be closed December 24th & 25th for Christmas, and January 1st for New Years' Day. The office will be open regular hours all other days.

Earlier this week, SPNN's Executive Director Mike Wassenaar announced his resignation,  effective March 1, 2013. We are now beginning the search for a new Executive Director to lead the organization. It is with a mix of excitement and sadness that we announce the resignation of our Executive Director, Mike Wassenaar. Mike has led the organization since 2000, bringing stability and guidance. Everyone at SPNN will be very sad to see him go, but we look forward to the next chapter in our history, as the Board of Directors conducts a search for a new leader. We wish Mike the best of luck in all his future endeavors, which we are certain he will be successful in.

SPNN receives seven national awards

SPNN is very proud to announce we have received seven national awards from the Alliance for Community Media (ACM). The awards were presented at this year’s ACM conference in Chicago during the gala dinner on August 1, surrounded by our peers in community media. The honors we received included the Jewell Ryan-White Award for Cultural Diversity, presented posthumously to Kwame McDonald; the Sue Buske Leadership Award, presented to our Executive Director Mike Wassenaar; two Hometown Video Awards for SPNN Youth; two

SPNN celebrates our partners and members at Annual Meeting

SPNN saluted our community at our Annual Meeting on May 8 at our studios in downtown St. Paul. Each year, we wrap up our fiscal year by giving an update on our progress as a non-profit, and thanking the people who made the year special. This year, we had plenty to be thankful for: a successful financial year; expanded staffing; a new logo, website and newsletter; increased outreach; and new programs, like Doc U and the Market web series. 

Now hiring Youth Intern Coordinator

SPNN, the community television provider for the city of Saint Paul, is seeking a temporary full-time coordinator (32 hours per week) for our Youth Intern Program.  The ideal candidate will have video production experience; enjoy working with youth from diverse communities; and have a background in creating media addressing community issues.  The Youth Intern Coordinator will be team-teaching with one other staff, mentoring high school aged youth in a seven-week internship experience.  Participants will produce documentaries about issues affecting Saint Paul youth.

SPNN Awarded Minnesota State Arts Board Grant

SPNN is very proud to announce that we have been selected as a 2012 grant recipient for the Minnesota State Arts Board’s Arts Access program! We will use the funding to create a new documentary filmmaking program, SPNN’s Doc U.
