Higher Ground Academy presents "Community Views"

This June, SPNN Youth finished up its semester-long collaboration with youth at Higher Ground Academy (HGA). Throughout the class, the students experimented with do-it-yourself and community-based styles of media making. Together they crafted camera obscuras out of paper boxes, created a zine about community and personal heros, and used video and still cameras  to produce a final piece entitled "Community Views."

This short piece combines their street photography and on-the street interviews with Saint Paul residents who were asked,"What is the one thing you would change about your community?" "Community Voices" not only captures the voice of people being interviewed, but presents it from the perspective of the HGA youth producers. Photos and Interviewees encompass a range of topics, but often highlight the effects of the Central Corridor lightrail construction and University Avenue in transition.
