Set It Up Art Segment Featured in Minneapolis Youth Art Showcase
SPNN Youth staff and Youth Action Committee members view Loose Ends exhibit at Intermedia Arts in MinneapolisRecently, Breon Jones, a SPNN youth producer and tireless volunteer, had her Set It Up segment, Public Art, featured in the youth art showcase Loose Ends: Definitions of the Young Mind at Intermedia Arts. The show, a multimedia showcase featuring everything from two-dimentional paintings, to play scripts, to bone collections, ran from late September to early October. Public Art was one of a small selection of digital videos selected for the showcase reel.
Breon's video was a part of a larger Set It Up episode on the Twin Cities art scene. The first segment of Public Art explores the work of Wing Young Huie, a local Twin Cities photographer who is known for using his telling portraits of Minnesota residents as social commentary on the current hardships in the state's urban centers. In the video we see several of Huie's award-winning photographs that are on display along several major urban corridors in the Twin Cities and hear about why Huie has chosen the streets as his gallery. In the second segment of Public Art, we meet the members of Power of Our Voices, an after school theater program for high school students. The POV segment features performances and testimonials from these talented young artists.
Loose Ends was also a forum for creativity, with several opportunities for visitors to make their own contribution to the exhibit. A collage wall marked the entrance of the exhibit featuring items from the participating artists and visitors. The wall was fully adorned with sketches, toys, candy wrappers and other youthful flotsam and jetsam. For those who lacked loose ends to contribute to the collage, there was a chalk wall where you could share a drawing or two, or three... or more.
Members of the SPNN Youth staff joined a few of our Youth Action Committee members on a tour of the exhbit on October 19. Intermedia Arts Youth Programs Director Michael Hay led the tour of both the exhibit and the rest of the IA facilities, including their theater performance space and their outdoor aerosol art gallery.
SPNN YTV Channel 16 will feature the full video reel from Loose Ends in early 2012. Be sure to check the YTV Schedule or follow SPNN Youth on Twitter to find out when the videos will premiere!
