As a Youth Media Leader for SPNN’s Community Productions, I was able to observe the  SPNN Production Crew produce five new “Conversations with Al McFarlane” episodes in mid-July, that will begin airing in the beginning of August. Each episode had an in-depth conversation on issues from politics to workforce inclusion.

I recently led SPNN Youth Open Lab's (SOL) sixth summer community workshop at Rondo Library. This session was geared toward spoken word videos and video poetry-making. However, it took a slight turn toward a conversation about media accessibility and how video poetry may impact the community. It also taught me a little about the role of community workshops beyond practical skill-building.

Earlier this month, Joua Lee, SPNN's CTEP AmeriCorps member, and Nickey Robare, our Online Communications Coordinator, both attended the Allied Media Conference (AMC). This annual conference, held every summer in Detroit, unites the worlds of media, art, technology, education and social justice. The Community Technology Empowerment Project (CTEP) AmeriCorps program bridges the digital divide for new immigrants and low-income communities in the Twin Cities.  AmeriCorps members help youth and adults use technology to better access social, civic, educational and economic opportunities.  Each month, we will highlight one of our 'great stories' from our CTEP members.  Great stories help to capture the impact a member has on an individual in the community beyond numbers.

Hello everyone! My name is Kevin Kalla and I coordinate Set It Up and the Youth Intern Program here at SPNN. I’ve been working in the youth development field for seven years now, and this year I was given the opportunity to participate in a practitioner’s fellowship through After School Matters. The fellowship brings together a diverse group of youth workers and administrators to perform field research on the work that they do. As part of my own research, I pulled together a focus group of youth that I’ve worked with here at SPNN.
