SPNN Seeks Archival Volunteer or Intern for Fall 2011
Position Description:
Saint Paul Neighborhood Network’ Archival volunteer or Intern will help with our Neighborhood Video Project program. SPNN is a non-profit community media center serving Saint Paul and the Twin Cities metro area. Our mission is to make media available, reflective and responsive to the needs of people in Saint Paul in order to increase understanding and respect for the diversity of people and ideas in our democratic society.
As part of this mission, SPNN is dedicated to educating youth about media technology. Currently, our Neighborhood Video Project works with middle school youth in three Saint Paul neighborhoods to create video documentaries about neighborhood history. Because these documentaries are based on interviews with neighborhood historians and residents, an extra component of our program involves preparing our footage and interviews for archival purposes.
Responsibilities:
The Archival volunteer/intern will work with SPNN and staff members from the Ramsey County Historical Society to create written transcripts of video footage and oral history interviews collected during the Neighborhood Video Project. In addition, the volunteer would work to convert raw video footage into digitized files for historical preservation. Training would be provided in this area.
Time Commitment:
The Archival volunteer/intern will work 5-10 hours per week with SPNN’s Youth Department, but the time and day of the week are flexible. This volunteer position will last until the completion of the project.
Desired Qualifications:
- Interest in archival and/or museum work
- Interest in media transcription and digitization
- Ability to type quickly
- Previous experience producing or working with media
